Terms of Service

These terms are a working draft awaiting legal review. They describe our current practices in good faith but should not be relied upon as final legal text.

Last updated: May 14, 2026

Acceptance of terms

By creating an account or using Read Master, you agree to these Terms of Service and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, you must not use the service.

Account requirements

You must be at least 13 years old (16 in the European Union) to create an account. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. Notify us immediately at [email protected] if you suspect unauthorized access.

License granted to you

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to access and use Read Master for your own reading and study. This license does not include the right to resell, sublicense, or share access to the service, or to use the service to build a competing product.

Rights warranty

By uploading or importing content into Read Master, you represent and warrant that:

  • You are the copyright owner of the content, or you have obtained all rights, licenses, consents, and permissions necessary to upload it and to authorize Read Master to process it as described in these Terms and our Privacy Policy.
  • Your use of the content within Read Master is lawful under applicable copyright law, including any fair use, fair dealing, or personal-use exception you rely upon.
  • The content does not infringe the intellectual property rights, privacy rights, or any other rights of any third party.
  • You will not upload content that circumvents or is designed to circumvent technological protection measures (TPMs) or digital rights management (DRM) controls applied by a rights holder.

Prohibited uses

You may not use Read Master to:

  • Upload infringing content. Upload, import, or process any book, document, or other material whose copyright you do not own and for which you have no lawful right to reproduce or process.
  • Circumvent DRM. Upload or process content from which digital rights management (DRM) or other access controls have been stripped or circumvented, or use the service as a tool to facilitate DRM circumvention.
  • Import from prohibited sources. Scrape, crawl, or mass-import content from websites, services, or platforms that prohibit such access in their terms of service or via robots.txt, or that require a separate license not held by you. See “Permitted sources” below for specific guidance on common sources.
  • Share library access. Share your account credentials or library contents with other people to give them access to content they are not individually licensed to use, or otherwise use the service to run a lending or distribution operation for copyrighted works.
  • Use AI outputs as substitutes for protected works. Systematically use AI-generated guides, assessments, or summaries as functional replacements for access to or purchase of the protected works from which they were derived, in a manner that substitutes for the market for the original work.
  • Abuse the AI system. Use the AI features to generate content that is harmful, illegal, harassing, defamatory, or that violates the rights of others.
  • Reverse-engineer or scrape the service. Scrape, mirror, decompile, reverse-engineer, or attempt to extract the source code of Read Master, or to access the service by automated means beyond what is expressly permitted.

Permitted sources

This section provides guidance on specific common sources. This is not an exhaustive list — the general rules in “Prohibited uses” apply to all sources.

Project Gutenberg

  • You may import works that are genuinely in the public domain in your jurisdiction and are available on Project Gutenberg. It is your responsibility to verify that a specific work is public domain in your jurisdiction before importing it.
  • Works from Project Gutenberg may carry their own license or trademark terms (for example, the Project Gutenberg trademark and license terms that appear in certain editions). You agree to comply with those terms, including preserving any source, attribution, or license metadata that accompanies the work.
  • Do not import Gutenberg works that are marked as restricted in your jurisdiction.

Google Books

  • You may use Read Master to view book metadata (title, author, description), search results, cover images, and public-domain book content available through the Google Books API or Google Books viewer, in accordance with Google's terms of service.
  • You may follow links to the Google Books web reader or Google Play Books for copyrighted works you have purchased — Read Master surfaces these as outbound links only and does not reproduce the copyrighted content.
  • You may not scrape, extract, or import the full text of copyrighted books from the Google Books preview or viewer, whether manually or via automation, unless you hold a separate license to that content from the copyright owner.

Limited license to your content

You retain all rights you hold in content you upload or import. By using Read Master, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide license to:

  • host and store the content on our infrastructure (Cloudflare R2, Neon);
  • make copies as necessary for backup, replication, and disaster recovery;
  • transform the content (for example, extract text, parse structure, normalize encoding) solely for the purpose of displaying it to you in the reader;
  • transmit the content (or selected portions of it) to our authorized subprocessors — including Anthropic — solely to provide the AI features you request; and
  • display the content to you through the Read Master interface.

This license is granted solely to enable us to provide the features you request. We do not share, redistribute, sell, or otherwise make your content available to any party beyond our authorized subprocessors, and only for the purposes described above.

This license terminates when you delete the content from your library or delete your account, subject to the retention periods described in our Privacy Policy.

AI outputs

Outputs generated by our AI tools (pre-reading guides, post-reading assessments, flashcards, explanations) are generated for your personal use. We do not claim ownership of these outputs.

AI outputs are best-effort and may contain inaccuracies, omissions, or errors — verify anything that matters to you with authoritative sources. AI outputs are not professional legal, medical, financial, or other expert advice.

Subscriptions and billing

Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel. Payments are processed by Stripe — we never see or store your full card number. You may cancel at any time from Settings Billing; cancellations take effect at the end of the current billing period. We do not issue refunds for partial billing periods except where required by applicable law or our refund policy published in the Help Center.

Repeat-infringer policy

In accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and as a condition of our eligibility for the DMCA safe-harbor provisions, Read Master maintains a policy of terminating, in appropriate circumstances, the accounts of users who are repeat infringers of copyright.

A user may be designated a repeat infringer if they receive multiple valid, uncontested DMCA takedown notices within a reasonable period, or if they repeatedly upload content in violation of these Terms after receiving warnings. The specific threshold and circumstances are determined by us in good faith based on the totality of the conduct. This policy is applied consistently and without discrimination.

We will notify affected users before termination where feasible and where doing so does not itself violate a legal obligation.

Suspension and removal rights

Read Master reserves the right to suspend access to, remove, or disable specific content or accounts in the following circumstances:

  • We receive a valid DMCA takedown notice or other legally binding order from a rights-holder or competent authority requiring removal.
  • We have reasonable grounds to believe that content violates these Terms, applicable law, or the rights of a third party.
  • An account is used in a manner that poses a security risk to the service or other users.
  • We are required to do so by applicable law or a binding court order.

Where feasible and not prohibited by law, we will provide advance notice and an opportunity to respond before taking action. Users whose content has been removed may submit a counter-notice as described in our DMCA Policy.

Termination by you

You can delete your account at any time from Settings Privacy. Deletion triggers removal of your data from primary databases within the timelines described in our Privacy Policy.

Disclaimer of warranties

The service is provided “as is” and “as available” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including but not limited to warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation, or that defects will be corrected.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Read Master and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the service. Our total cumulative liability to you for all claims arising under or related to these Terms is capped at the greater of (a) the total fees paid by you to Read Master in the twelve months immediately preceding the claim, or (b) USD $100.

Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of [jurisdiction TBD — to be confirmed by counsel]. Any dispute that cannot be resolved informally will be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of [venue TBD — to be confirmed by counsel].

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be announced via email or in-app banner at least 30 days before they take effect. Continued use of Read Master after the effective date constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
