Prior Knowledge's Outsized Role in Reading Comprehension

Two people read the same chapter. One walks away with a clear map of the argument, the other with fragments. The obvious explanation is that one of them is simply a better reader. Decades of research point somewhere less flattering and far more fixable: the difference is often not reading skill at all, but what each reader knew before they started.

The weak readers who beat the strong ones

In 1988, Donna Recht and Lauren Leslie published what became one of the most quoted experiments in reading research (Recht & Leslie, 1988 (opens in new tab)). They sorted 64 junior high students along two axes: strong or weak scores on a standard reading test, and high or low knowledge of baseball. Every student then silently read the same passage narrating a half inning of a baseball game and reconstructed it, moving wooden figures around a miniature field while describing the action aloud.

The reading test turned out to predict much less than everyone assumed. Weak readers who knew baseball reconstructed the inning about as well as strong readers who knew baseball, and both groups ran far ahead of strong readers who knew little about the game. A low score on a general reading assessment simply stopped mattering once the reader carried a rich mental model of the domain. Prior knowledge was doing work that reading skill could not substitute for.

The study is elegant because it separates two things that normally travel together. In everyday life, people who read well also tend to know a lot, so their knowledge silently inflates our estimate of their skill. Put knowledge and skill in different people, as Recht and Leslie did, and knowledge holds its own.

Knowledge has a threshold, not a dial

A natural objection is that baseball is a special case, a game with its own dense jargon. A 2019 study from ETS researchers Tenaha O'Reilly, Zuowei Wang, and John Sabatini scaled the question up (O'Reilly, Wang & Sabatini, 2019 (opens in new tab)). They tested 3,534 high school students across 37 US schools on their background knowledge of ecosystems, then had them read and answer questions about ecology texts.

The relationship they found was not a smooth line where every extra fact buys a little more comprehension. It was a broken line. Below a measurable knowledge threshold, knowing a bit more of the topic vocabulary barely moved comprehension at all. Above the threshold, the relationship turned strong and positive. The practical reading of that shape: when too much of a text's conceptual ground is missing, comprehension does not degrade gracefully, it fails to get off the ground. Once you clear the floor, each new piece of knowledge starts paying.

That reframes what preparation is for. The goal of pre-reading work is not to learn the book before the book. It is to get over the threshold, so the text can start teaching you instead of bouncing off.

Why knowledge does this much work

The classic explanation comes from schema theory. In their influential 1984 review, Richard Anderson and P. David Pearson described comprehension as an interaction between the text and the reader's organized knowledge structures, or schemas (Anderson & Pearson, 1984 (opens in new tab)). A schema gives incoming information somewhere to attach. It supplies the slots that new details fill, licenses the inferences the author left unstated, tells you which sentences are load-bearing, and gives memory a structure to reconstruct from later. Readers with a baseball schema did not just decode the half inning, they simulated it, which is close to what your brain is doing whenever comprehension works.

Modern evidence has added useful fine print. A 2021 critical review by Reid Smith, Pamela Snow, Tessa Serry, and Lorraine Hammond examined 23 studies of background knowledge in primary school readers (Smith, Snow, Serry & Hammond, 2021 (opens in new tab)). Knowledge helped broadly, but its effect depended on the text and the reader. Weaker readers could partially compensate for weak skills when they knew the domain well, echoing the baseball result. Readers with less knowledge depended much more on the text being cohesive and explicit. And existing misconceptions could interfere, because a schema that fits the text badly assimilates the text badly. Knowledge is a lever, not a guarantee, and it occasionally needs correcting rather than adding.

What to do before you read

The strategy implications are unusually concrete, because prior knowledge is buildable on demand.

  1. Do a reconnaissance pass first. Read the table of contents, section headings, and any chapter summaries before the chapters. You are not learning the content yet, you are building the scaffold the content will hang on.
  2. Clear the vocabulary floor. Skim for the ten or so recurring terms you cannot define and look them up before deep reading, not during. The threshold study suggests this small investment is disproportionately valuable when a topic is new, because it moves you into the range where reading starts to compound.
  3. Read an easier adjacent text first. An encyclopedia entry or a popular article on the same topic is not a detour. For a hard book, it is often the cheapest way over the threshold, and it beats grinding through the opening chapters twice, a strategy that reliably underperforms anyway.
  4. Audit what you think you know. Write down your current picture of the topic in three or four sentences before starting. Misconceptions distort comprehension more than blank spots do, and stating your assumptions is the fastest way to notice when the text contradicts them.
  5. Consolidate the schema you just built. After reading, recall the structure from memory. Today's retrieval practice becomes next month's prior knowledge, which is how each book you read lowers the threshold for the next one.

The encouraging conclusion hiding in this literature is that comprehension is not a fixed talent. The baseball study's weak readers did not become better decoders, they were simply handed a topic where they were already rich. You can hand yourself that advantage on purpose, for almost any book, with twenty minutes of deliberate preparation.
